Life Trustee and Honorary Alumnus Peter Bryant, who ushered in record-breaking classes for Cornell College as the vice president of enrollment and dean of admissions from 1982 to 1992, passed away on Oct. 13. He was 86.

Bryant provided steady leadership for Cornell College during a pivotal time, helping the college reverse enrollment trends and build momentum for the future. His impact is recounted in “Cornell College: A Sesquicentennial History.”

The results of Bryant’s efforts soon became legendary. Every year between 1984 and 1996, the enrollment exceeded 1,000 and reached a zenith of 1,168 the year Bryant left. He not only reversed the trends but also sustained a full enrollment. Cornell went from predictions of a college of 700 to an enrollment comfortably over 1,000 in seven years.

Bryant returned to Cornell to serve for nearly 30 years as a Cornell Trustee and was named a Life Trustee in the spring of 2024. He and his wife, JoAnn, supported Cornell in many ways, including the Science Facilities Project, the renovations of Garner President’s House, the college’s endowment, the Cornell Fund, and more.

“There’s been a tremendous sense of pride of being associated with the college and all of the growth, development, and success over the years,” said Bryant in 2022, following their gift to the Athletic and Wellness Facilities Project. “There’s little question that this has been a big part of our lives, and it has been such a joy.”

Bryant, born in 1940, grew up in Chicago alongside his younger sister Sue, who was his best friend. His early years included singing in an Episcopal church boys’ choir and attending Cubs games at Wrigley Field. He went on to attend Coe College, where he met his wife, JoAnn. The two married and had a daughter, Julie (Cornell College Class of 1988), and son, Jay. Bryant always put his family first, and his greatest joy was spending time with his loved ones.

Bryant proceeded to earn his master’s degree from the University of Iowa and worked in a variety of higher education and marketing positions, including at Cornell. He eventually retired in 2017 as senior vice president and principal of Ruffalo Noel Levitz, where he provided services in enrollment, student success, and fundraising to the higher education and nonprofit communities. In that role, he conducted enrollment assessments and consulted with more than 700 institutions. He and daughter Julie had the opportunity to work together for the majority of his years at Ruffalo Noel Levitz, which was a special honor for both of them. Bryant was known for always having a 3x5 card and pen in his pocket to make notes, which even continued to his final days.

Bryant was an advocate, mentor, and a professional resource for many people throughout his career. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched. When he saw you, he remembered your name and greeted you with a warm smile, a hearty laugh, and a hug or a handshake. Bryant always lit up the room and made each person he interacted with feel seen, special, and loved. He always found ways to see the positive in any situation. His favorite question was: “Isn’t this fun?” and the answer was always most certainly yes, especially when he was around. Bryant often said he couldn’t have written a better script for his life.

Bryant is survived by his wife, daughter, son, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
